Redaction verification aid

Is My PDF Redaction Safe?

A rectangle drawn over text can hide information visually without removing the underlying text object. This browser-local check looks for supported overlay patterns, but it cannot certify that every type of redaction is complete.

Scan a PDF locally

The scan runs locally in your browser. Your PDF is not uploaded to the UseVelyo compression API or an external document-processing service.

How to check a redacted PDF for supported failures

Scan the exported redacted copy, review coverage first, and investigate every reported page in a PDF tool that can inspect or permanently remove the underlying content.

This is a diagnostic aid, not a safety guarantee. It scans supported patterns and may miss unsupported PDF structures.

An image-only scanned page may have no extractable text layer, so text-dependent checks are limited unless the PDF already contains OCR text.

Try a synthetic demo first

These small PDFs are generated in this page and contain no user data.

Local, read-only processing: the PDF is parsed in a browser worker. It is not uploaded, changed, converted to Base64, or sent to the compression API.
  1. Step 1

    Use the final redacted PDF

Select the exact copy intended for release so the scan reflects the saved content streams and page structure.

  2. Step 2

    Check redaction coverage and findings

Confirm whether pages have extractable text, then review critical dark-overlay findings and warning-level white-overlay findings separately.

  3. Step 3

    Verify and recreate uncertain redactions

Treat findings as evidence for review. If a cover may be cosmetic, return to a proper redaction workflow and create a new release copy.

A Visual Black Box Is Not the Same as Content Removal

PDF pages are assembled from text, images, paths, and other drawing operations. A later dark rectangle can make earlier text disappear on screen while leaving that text extractable. The scanner compares supported text geometry with later opaque overlays and reports a possible incomplete redaction when the structures overlap.

A critical finding identifies a supported high-confidence pattern; it is not a legal conclusion and should be checked against the page and the redaction workflow. Normal page design can contain dark areas, so the detector also uses paint order, overlap, opacity, color, annotation position, and image structure to reduce common false positives.

  • Dark content-stream overlays above extractable text receive the strongest review signal.
  • Opaque solid-dark images may be checked when their structure supports that conclusion.
  • White rectangles remain warning-level because a blank form field or page template can look structurally similar.

Why White-Box Findings Require Extra Caution

White-on-white covering is a real concealment technique, but ordinary forms and document templates also draw white rectangles. The scanner suppresses known widget appearances, repeated multi-page layout elements, and visible duplicate text patterns. A remaining unique white overlay is still reported as a warning rather than proof of failed redaction.

Review the source of the document and how the cover was created. If someone used a shape, drawing tool, or background color instead of a dedicated redaction command, recreate the output with a method that removes the underlying information and then inspect the result again.

Scanned Pages and Complex Graphics Limit Verification

An image-only page has no extractable text geometry for this check to compare with an overlay. The report therefore marks redaction checking as unavailable or partial when some pages lack a text layer. It does not infer safety from the absence of a finding on those pages.

The scanner may miss image-based redactions, OCR-only content, clipping masks, arbitrary complex overlays, unusual transparency behavior, and unsupported PDF structures. It does not provide compliance certification or establish that a document is legally sufficient for release.

Questions about this PDF check

Can this tool prove that every redaction is complete?

No. It detects supported structural patterns and may miss image-based, OCR-only, clipped, or unusually composed content. Every important release still needs an appropriate human and workflow review.

Why is a white rectangle reported only as a warning?

White overlays can cover text, but visually similar rectangles are also used by fillable forms and page templates. The scanner applies structural filters and reports remaining ambiguous cases for review rather than calling them confirmed failures.

What does limited redaction coverage mean?

It means one or more pages lack an extractable text layer. The scanner cannot compare text with overlay geometry on those scanned or image-based pages.
